01

Is Miami tap water really that bad?

What you should know about the water flowing through Miami-Dade County's aging infrastructure.

Yes and no. Miami-Dade tap water meets EPA standards under the Safe Drinking Water Act, so technically it is considered safe. However, "meets minimum federal standards" and "optimal for your health" are two very different things. Miami's water supply comes from the Biscayne Aquifer, which runs through porous limestone bedrock. Along the way, it picks up dissolved minerals, and the municipal treatment process adds chlorine and chloramine for disinfection. Aging infrastructure introduces additional risks, including lead from old service lines. Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) commonly reach 350+ ppm in Miami-Dade, well above the ideal range. While you won't get sick from a glass of tap water, the cumulative exposure to these contaminants over years is what concerns health professionals.
Miami-Dade water contains a range of contaminants at detectable levels. Chlorine and chloramine are added intentionally for disinfection but affect taste and can form harmful disinfection byproducts (trihalomethanes/THMs). Lead can leach from aging service lines and household plumbing. PFAS (forever chemicals) have been detected in South Florida water supplies. Fluoride is added for dental health but is a concern for some families. Hardness minerals — calcium and magnesium — are present at 15–25 grains per gallon, causing scale buildup. Other detectable contaminants include chromium-6, arsenic at trace levels, and various pharmaceutical residues that municipal treatment does not fully remove.
Miami's water hardness is a direct result of its geology. The Biscayne Aquifer, which supplies Miami-Dade's water, runs through extremely porous limestone bedrock. As water percolates through this rock, it dissolves calcium and magnesium — the minerals responsible for water hardness. Miami-Dade averages 15–25 grains per gallon (gpg) of hardness, which is classified as "very hard." For context, the Water Quality Association defines anything above 7 gpg as "hard." This extreme hardness causes white scale buildup on faucets and showerheads, reduces the lifespan of water heaters and appliances, leaves spots on glassware, and can make skin and hair feel dry after showering.
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), commonly called "forever chemicals," have been detected in South Florida water supplies. These synthetic chemicals are used in non-stick coatings, food packaging, waterproof clothing, and firefighting foam. They earned their nickname because they do not break down naturally in the environment or the human body. PFAS exposure has been linked to cancer, thyroid disease, immune system suppression, and developmental issues in children. Standard municipal water treatment does not fully remove PFAS. Reverse osmosis is one of the few proven residential methods to effectively reduce PFAS levels by 95% or more.
Fluoride has been added to Miami-Dade's public water supply since the 1940s to help prevent tooth decay. Approximately 70% of US water systems still add fluoride. However, a growing body of research has raised concerns about excessive fluoride exposure, linking it to thyroid issues, bone disease, neurological effects, and dental fluorosis (discoloration of teeth). Many families, especially those with young children, prefer to control their fluoride intake rather than having it mandated in their water supply. Reverse osmosis systems remove 95%+ of fluoride, giving you the choice to get fluoride through toothpaste and dental treatments instead.
The most common complaint about Miami tap water is a noticeable chlorine taste and odor. The chlorine/chloramine used for disinfection is often detectable, especially in warmer months when treatment plants increase dosage to prevent bacterial growth. During South Florida's warm seasons, algae blooms in the source water can also introduce musty, earthy flavors. The high mineral content gives Miami water a "heavy" mouthfeel that many residents notice when compared to bottled or filtered water. After installing a CrystalFlow system, our customers consistently describe the difference as "night and day" — crisp, clean water without any chemical taste or unusual odor.
02

Okay, I need a filter. But what kind?

Understanding the difference between filter types so you can make an informed decision.

Residential water filters fall into three main categories. Media filters use carbon or sediment to filter water — these are found in pitchers (like Brita), fridge filters, and faucet attachments. They improve taste and odor and reduce chlorine, but they cannot remove heavy metals, fluoride, PFAS, bacteria, or dissolved solids. Membrane filters (reverse osmosis) use a semi-permeable membrane with pores as small as 0.0001 microns, combined with multi-stage carbon filtration, to remove 99.9% of contaminants including everything media filters miss. Water softeners use ion exchange to remove calcium and magnesium hardness minerals, protecting your plumbing and appliances from scale buildup. For comprehensive protection, many Miami homes benefit from a combination of RO and softening.
Reverse osmosis (RO) is a multi-stage filtration process that produces the purest drinking water available for residential use. A typical RO system includes: Stage 1 — Sediment pre-filter to remove particulates, rust, and sand. Stage 2 — Carbon block filter to remove chlorine, chemicals, and organic compounds. Stage 3 — The RO membrane, which has pores just 0.0001 microns in size (1/1,000,000th of a human hair). Only water molecules can pass through; contaminants are flushed away. Stage 4 — Post-carbon polish for final taste improvement. Premium systems add remineralization and UV sterilization stages. The result is water that is 99.9% free of dissolved contaminants.
Under-sink / Point of Use (POU) systems filter water at a single faucet — typically your kitchen sink for drinking and cooking water. They are compact, affordable, and ideal for condos and apartments. Whole-home / Point of Entry (POE) systems are installed on your main water line and treat ALL water entering your home — every faucet, shower, dishwasher, and washing machine. This means softer skin and hair, no scale buildup on appliances, and clean water everywhere. CrystalFlow offers both: Kitchen Guard is our under-sink RO solution for pure drinking water. Home Shield and Pure Life are whole-home systems that combine softening, RO, and advanced purification for complete protection.
A water softener uses ion exchange to remove calcium and magnesium — the minerals that make water "hard." Given that Miami-Dade averages 15–25 grains per gallon of hardness (well above the "hard" threshold of 7 gpg), the answer for most Miami homes is yes, you likely need one. Signs you have a hard water problem: white, chalky buildup on faucets and showerheads; spots on glasses and dishes after washing; dry, itchy skin or dull hair after showering; water heater inefficiency or premature failure; stiff laundry. Hard water costs Miami homeowners an estimated $800–1,200 per year in reduced appliance lifespan, increased energy bills, and excess soap and detergent use.
TDS stands for Total Dissolved Solids — it measures all the minerals, salts, metals, and other dissolved substances in your water, expressed in parts per million (ppm). Miami tap water commonly tests at 350+ ppm TDS. The EPA's secondary standard recommends below 500 ppm, but that is a ceiling, not an ideal. For reference, premium bottled water typically has a TDS of 20–50 ppm. Reverse osmosis systems reduce TDS to 0–50 ppm, essentially giving you bottled water quality from your tap. While not all dissolved solids are harmful, a high TDS reading indicates the water is carrying a heavy load of substances — and among those substances are the contaminants you want removed.
Most bottled water is reverse osmosis water. Brands like Dasani, Aquafina, and many store brands use RO purification. With a home RO system, you get the same or better quality water for a fraction of the cost. A family of four relying on bottled water spends $1,200–$2,400 per year. A CrystalFlow Kitchen Guard system pays for itself in under a year and produces unlimited pure water after that — with zero plastic waste. You also eliminate the inconvenience of hauling cases of water, running out unexpectedly, and the environmental impact of plastic bottles. Home RO gives you lab-grade water on demand, 24/7.
Pitcher filters use carbon media to improve taste and reduce chlorine — and they do that reasonably well. However, they do not remove heavy metals (lead, mercury), fluoride, PFAS/forever chemicals, bacteria, viruses, or the vast majority of dissolved solids. They also require frequent filter replacements (every 40 gallons or roughly every 2 months), and the filtration quality degrades significantly as the filter ages. For Miami's water, with its high TDS, hardness, and detectable PFAS, a pitcher filter addresses only a small fraction of what is actually in your water. Reverse osmosis is the most comprehensive residential filtration method available.
Traditional RO systems waste 3–5 gallons for every 1 gallon of purified water produced. Modern systems have dramatically improved this ratio. The Waterdrop systems installed by CrystalFlow achieve a 1:1 ratio or better — meaning one gallon of concentrate water for every gallon of purified water, and some models are even more efficient. It is also important to understand that the "waste" water is not dirty — it is simply concentrated tap water that did not pass through the membrane. Many of our customers repurpose this water for watering plants, cleaning, or laundry. Given that Miami-Dade has abundant water supply, the modest water usage of a modern RO system is a very reasonable trade-off for 99.9% contaminant removal.

Why CrystalFlow? How is it better?

Our premium Waterdrop systems, professional installation, and multi-product lineup explained.

CrystalFlow systems remove 99.9% of chlorine, lead, fluoride, arsenic, PFAS (forever chemicals), chromium-6, mercury, bacteria, viruses, microplastics, and Total Dissolved Solids. All Waterdrop systems we install are NSF/ANSI 42, 53, and 58 certified — the gold standard for water filtration. NSF 42 covers taste and odor (chlorine), NSF 53 covers health-related contaminants (lead, cysts), and NSF 58 covers reverse osmosis performance. This means every claim has been independently verified by a third-party laboratory, not just manufacturer testing.
We offer three tiers to match different needs and budgets. Kitchen Guard ($699–$849 installed): Under-sink reverse osmosis for pure drinking and cooking water. Ideal for condos, apartments, or anyone who wants clean drinking water at their kitchen faucet. Home Shield ($1,799–$2,199 installed): Whole-home water softener plus RO drinking water system. Eliminates hard water throughout your home while providing purified water in the kitchen. Pure Life ($2,699–$3,199 installed): Our complete home water system with softening, RO, UV sterilization, mineral remineralization, and smart monitoring. The ultimate whole-home protection. All prices include professional installation, a dedicated faucet, and manufacturer warranty.
Kitchen Guard is ideal if you live in a condo or apartment, rent your home, or primarily want purified drinking and cooking water without treating the entire home. Home Shield is the right choice if you own your home and suffer from hard water problems — scale buildup, dry skin, spotty dishes — and also want pure drinking water. Pure Life is for families who want the ultimate protection: UV sterilization for bacteria and viruses, mineral remineralization for optimal taste and pH, and smart monitoring to track water quality in real time. Our free in-home water test takes the guesswork out of the decision. We test your water and recommend the exact package that addresses your specific water quality issues.
We are a certified Waterdrop installer and work exclusively with their premium product line. Kitchen Guard features the Waterdrop G5P500A or T-3M under-sink RO systems. Home Shield pairs the G3P600 or G3P800 with a whole-home softener. Pure Life uses the flagship X12 or X16 systems with UV sterilization and mineral remineralization. Waterdrop is an industry leader in residential water treatment, known for compact design, efficient water usage, and superior contaminant removal. As a certified installer, we ensure every system is set up correctly, covered by warranty, and performing at its rated capacity.
Dramatically. By removing chlorine, dissolved solids, and other contaminants that affect flavor, CrystalFlow-filtered water is consistently described by our customers as crisp, clean, and refreshing. The difference is immediately noticeable — especially if you are used to Miami's chlorinated tap water. Our premium systems (Pure Life) include a mineral remineralization stage that adds back beneficial calcium and magnesium after RO filtration. This raises the pH to alkaline levels (8–9.5) and creates a smooth, slightly sweet taste profile that many people prefer over both tap and standard RO water. Customers tell us it transforms their coffee, tea, and cooking as well.
UV (ultraviolet) sterilization destroys 99.99% of bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms by disrupting their DNA with UV-C light. It is a chemical-free disinfection method — no chlorine or other additives — that provides an additional layer of protection beyond what RO filtration achieves on its own. UV sterilization is included in our Pure Life packages. It is especially valuable for households with well water (which does not receive municipal disinfection), homes with immunocompromised family members, and families with infants or young children who are more vulnerable to waterborne pathogens.
Reverse osmosis is exceptionally thorough — it removes virtually everything from water, including beneficial minerals. The remineralization stage adds back controlled amounts of calcium and magnesium after filtration. This serves two purposes: it raises the pH to alkaline levels (8–9.5), and it significantly improves the taste of the water. Pure RO water can taste "flat" to some people; remineralized water has a clean, slightly mineral taste that most people find more satisfying. Remineralization is included in our Pure Life packages and uses a long-lasting mineral cartridge that is replaced during regular maintenance visits.
Yes. Reverse osmosis is an excellent solution for well water, which often contains elevated levels of sediment, iron, sulfur, hardness minerals, and potentially bacteria that municipal water treatment would normally address. Well water can vary significantly in quality depending on your location and aquifer conditions. During your free water test, we assess your well water's specific characteristics and may recommend pre-treatment (such as a sediment filter or iron removal system) to protect the RO membrane and ensure optimal performance. Our technician designs a customized setup for your water source.
Kitchen Guard under-sink systems are compact: approximately 14" x 5" x 18". They fit comfortably under standard kitchen sinks with room to spare for cleaning supplies and other items. Home Shield and Pure Life whole-home systems are installed in your garage, utility room, or near your main water line entry point — not under the sink. These systems include a water softener unit and may include additional filtration components. During your free consultation, our technician assesses your available space and designs the installation layout before any work begins, so there are never surprises on installation day.
Select systems include smart monitoring capabilities. The Waterdrop X16 (available in our Pure Life package) features an integrated smart display showing real-time TDS readings, filter life remaining, and daily water usage. It also offers app-based monitoring with push notifications when filters need changing. The G3P800 (available in Home Shield) includes a smart display for filter life and TDS monitoring. Even for systems without smart features, CrystalFlow sends proactive email and text reminders based on your installation date and expected filter life so you never miss a maintenance window.
Professional installation guarantees proper setup, leak-free connections, local code compliance, and full warranty coverage. DIY installation mistakes can cause water damage (which homeowner's insurance may not cover), void manufacturer warranties, and result in poor filtration performance if connections are not properly sealed. CrystalFlow handles everything — from the initial water test to selecting the right system, to expert installation by a certified technician, to ongoing support and maintenance. You also get the peace of mind of a local company that stands behind its work. If anything goes wrong, you call us directly — not a national call center.

How does professional installation work?

CrystalFlow's white-glove installation process, from consultation to completion.

Our process is straightforward. Step 1: Book a free water test through our website or by calling (786) 947-3824. Step 2: We visit your home, test your water quality, assess your space, and recommend the right system. Step 3: Schedule your installation at a time that works for you. Step 4: Our certified technician installs everything, tests the system, and walks you through operation and maintenance. The entire process from water test to pure water flowing from your tap typically takes less than a week.
Installation times vary by system. Kitchen Guard (under-sink): 1–2 hours. Home Shield (softener + RO): 2–3 hours. Pure Life (complete system): 3–4 hours. Our technicians respect your time — we arrive within the scheduled window, work efficiently, protect your floors and surfaces, and clean up completely when finished. Your system starts delivering purified water immediately upon completion.
Minimal preparation is needed. For under-sink systems, simply clear the area under your kitchen sink so our technician has room to work. For whole-home systems, ensure access to the area near your main water line entry point (typically in the garage or a utility closet). Our team handles everything else — plumbing connections, faucet installation, testing, and cleanup. If your installation requires anything unusual, we will let you know during the consultation visit.
Under-sink RO systems require a small hole (approximately 1–1.5 inches) in your countertop or sink for the dedicated drinking water faucet. We use diamond-tipped drill bits for clean, precise cuts on all surfaces including granite, quartz, and marble. If your sink already has an unused hole from a previous system, soap dispenser, or sprayer, we will use that instead. All plumbing connections use standard compression fittings — no permanent modifications to your main plumbing lines. Whole-home systems connect to your main water line using standard plumbing connections that a licensed professional can reverse if needed.
Yes, under-sink RO systems require a separate drinking water faucet. A high-quality gooseneck faucet is included with every CrystalFlow package at no extra charge. The faucet is installed next to your main kitchen faucet and provides a dedicated stream of purified water for drinking, cooking, and filling water bottles. If your sink already has an extra hole (from a previous RO system, soap dispenser, or side sprayer), we will use that existing opening. The dedicated faucet ensures you get full-flow purified water without affecting your regular kitchen faucet's performance.
Yes, we install in condos and apartments throughout Miami-Dade County. Under-sink systems (Kitchen Guard) are ideal for condos — they are compact, require no modifications to shared plumbing, and the installation is minimally invasive. Most condo installations do not require HOA approval, but we recommend checking with your building management if you are unsure. For high-rise buildings, we verify water pressure during the consultation to ensure optimal system performance. We have installed systems in buildings across Brickell, Edgewater, Coconut Grove, Coral Gables, and Miami Beach.
Yes, with your landlord's permission. Under-sink systems are minimally invasive — the only modifications are a small faucet hole and a drain connection for the concentrate water line. Both can be easily restored when you move out. We provide documentation you can share with your landlord explaining the installation, its minimal impact on the property, and how it can be removed. Many landlords are supportive because a water filtration system is an upgrade to the property. Some renters negotiate the system as a lease improvement with their landlord.
We offer installation Monday through Saturday, 8 AM to 5 PM. We understand that weekday installations are not always convenient, which is why Saturday availability is included at no additional charge. We work around your schedule and offer morning and afternoon time slots. To book your preferred installation date, call us at (786) 947-3824 or schedule through our online booking system.
After installation, your technician provides a complete walkthrough of your new system. This includes demonstrating how the faucet works, explaining the filter indicators, reviewing the maintenance schedule, and answering any questions. You receive warranty documentation, a maintenance guide, and our direct support line. We also set up your filter replacement reminders so you are notified when maintenance is due. Your system starts delivering purified water immediately — you will notice the difference with your very first glass.

What about maintenance and ongoing care?

Everything you need to know about keeping your system running at peak performance.

Filter replacement intervals depend on the filter type and your water usage. Sediment and carbon pre-filters: every 6–12 months. RO membrane: every 24 months. UV lamp: every 12 months (Pure Life packages). Mineral remineralization cartridge: every 12 months. Water softener resin: 5–7 years. Exact timing varies based on your household water consumption and your water quality. Smart-enabled systems (X16, G3P800) will alert you when it is time. For all other systems, we send proactive reminders based on your installation date.
Filter replacement sets range from $50–$200 depending on your system model and which filters are due for replacement. For example, a carbon pre-filter for a Kitchen Guard system is on the lower end, while a full filter set with RO membrane is at the higher end. Our Gold ($299/year) and Platinum ($499/year) warranty plans include annual filter changes at no additional cost — making them a smart investment that simplifies ownership and ensures your system always performs at its rated capacity.
Yes. All Waterdrop systems use a twist-and-lock filter cartridge design — no tools required. The cartridges are clearly labeled, and each one only fits in its correct position, so there is no risk of installing them incorrectly. The process takes about 10 minutes. We provide written and video instructions with every installation, and our support team is available by phone if you need guidance. Alternatively, you can schedule a service visit and our technician will handle the filter change for you. Filter changes are included with Gold and Platinum warranty plans.
Maintenance requirements are minimal. Beyond filter replacements, we recommend: periodically checking under the sink for any signs of moisture or leaks (a quick visual check), and for whole-home softener systems, replenishing the salt supply every 1–3 months depending on your water usage and hardness level. We also recommend an annual professional system inspection to verify performance, check connections, and test water quality. Annual inspections are included in Gold and Platinum warranty plans. For systems without a service plan, you can schedule an inspection visit at any time.
Contact us at (786) 947-3824 or info@crystalflowmiami.com. We offer same-day or next-day service for urgent issues like leaks or system failures. All systems include a manufacturer warranty from Waterdrop. On top of that, our optional protection plans provide extended coverage: Silver ($199/year) covers parts and labor, Gold ($299/year) adds annual maintenance and filter changes, and Platinum ($499/year) includes priority service, all filters, annual inspection, and extended warranty coverage. Because we are local to Miami-Dade, a real technician — not a call center — responds to your issue.
Under normal, regular use — no. RO tanks hold only purified water and are sealed from external contamination. There is minimal risk of bacterial growth when the system is used daily. However, if the system sits unused for more than a month (for example, during extended travel), we recommend flushing the system by running water through it for several minutes before use. Detailed instructions for system flushing are included in your welcome packet. For systems with UV sterilization (Pure Life), the UV lamp provides an additional safeguard against any microbial concerns.
Absolutely — and we strongly recommend it. Purified water makes a noticeable difference in the taste of coffee, tea, soups, rice, pasta, and anything where water quality directly impacts flavor. Many of our customers say the improvement in their morning coffee is the first thing they notice after installation. Water quality also affects baking, as chlorine and minerals can interact with yeast and other ingredients. Once you start cooking with purified water, you will not want to go back.
Multiple safeguards ensure you never miss a filter change. Smart-enabled systems (Waterdrop X16, G3P800) display filter life remaining on the unit's screen and send alerts through the companion app. For all systems, CrystalFlow sends email and text reminders based on your installation date and expected filter life cycle. Gold and Platinum warranty plan members receive scheduled maintenance visits — we show up, change the filters, inspect the system, and test the water. You can also check filter life anytime by looking at the indicator on your system or contacting our support team.
